How the recommended fan size is calculated
HVI splits sizing by room size, and a code floor competes with whichever one applies. The result is then rounded up to a common fan size, matching a real product on the shelf.

CFM = floor area (sq ft) x (ceiling height / 8 ft, minimum 1)HVI recommends 1 CFM per sq ft for bathrooms up to 100 sq ft and calls that approximately eight air changes per hour. HVI's worked example is a 5x8 bathroom with 8 ft ceilings sized at 40 CFM, so the area method has no minimum of its own. The ceiling scaling is this calculator's assumption, not HVI's: it treats the rate as an 8 ft ceiling rate, where 1 CFM per sq ft is exactly 7.5 ACH, and raises the CFM above 8 ft to hold that. Which method governs changes with room size, ceiling height and fixture count. A taller ceiling raises the area method's CFM because this calculator, not HVI, holds the 7.5 air changes per hour that 1 CFM per sq ft gives at an 8 ft ceiling. In a bathroom under 50 sq ft with a ceiling at or under 8 ft, the ASHRAE 62.2 and IRC code floor sets the fan size. A bathroom over 100 sq ft drops the area method entirely, leaving the fixture method to take over.

The 5x8 powder room shows the area method and the code floor giving different numbers, 40 CFM against 50 CFM, and the code floor wins. The 8x10 bath at a 10 ft ceiling shows the same footprint as the first row growing to 100 CFM, up from 80, because this calculator scales HVI's 1 CFM per sq ft rate by ceiling height to hold the same air change rate.

Limitations of this calculator
- This calculator does not compute duct losses. Pick the fan by its HVI-certified CFM at 0.25 in. w.c., then check that rating against the duct run you plan to install.
- HVI states 1 CFM per sq ft with no ceiling height adjustment. The scaling above 8 ft is this calculator's own assumption: it holds the 7.5 ACH that 1 CFM per sq ft gives at an 8 ft ceiling as room volume grows, and keeps the plain rate with no reduction for a ceiling at or under 8 ft.
- HVI's area method applies only up to 100 sq ft, regardless of ceiling height. Above that, the fixture method and the code floor are the only inputs to this calculator. A bathroom that size with no fixtures counted returns only the 50 CFM code floor.
- The recommended CFM assumes intermittent (on-demand) operation. A continuous system can run at the lower 20 CFM ASHRAE 62.2 continuous rate instead, shown as a separate row.
- Fixture counts here do not distinguish a combined tub and shower unit from two separate fixtures. Count a tub-shower combination once under whichever fixture type matches the primary use, or add both if local practice counts it twice.
- This is a preliminary sizing tool for the sales-phase conversation. A specific fan model selection, including its sound rating (sones) and control type, is a separate step.
Common bathroom fan sizing mistakes
- A fan rated 110 CFM free-air delivers less once it's ducted. A fan rated 110 CFM free-air can drop well below that once duct length, elbows and a wall or roof cap are in the run. Check the manufacturer's fan curve at your expected static pressure, and keep the duct run short and straight.
- Using the area method on a large bathroom. The HVI area method stops applying above 100 sq ft, no matter the ceiling height. A primary bath with a separate toilet room, double vanity and walk-in shower needs the fixture method for its full floor area.
- Forgetting the jetted tub CFM is double a standard tub. A jetted (whirlpool) tub counts as 100 CFM in the HVI fixture method, double a standard tub's 50 CFM. Skipping that doubling undersizes a primary bath with a jetted tub.
- Treating 50 CFM as an HVI number. HVI's own area method has no built-in minimum. Its example is a 40 sq ft bathroom with a 40 CFM fan. The 50 CFM floor comes from ASHRAE 62.2 and IRC Table M1505.4.4, a code requirement that applies on top of whichever sizing method the room calls for.
- Turning the fan off the moment the shower ends. HVI recommends running the fan for about 20 minutes after a shower or bath to clear the residual humidity. A timer switch or humidity sensor keeps that run-on time consistent without relying on someone remembering.
- A 5x8 powder room with one toilet still needs the 50 CFM code floor. The HVI area method sizes a 40 sq ft powder room at 40 CFM, under the ASHRAE 62.2 and IRC 50 CFM intermittent floor. The fixture method does not apply to a room this small, so the code floor sets the fan at 50 CFM.
Common questions about bathroom exhaust fans
What size fan does an 8x10 bathroom need?
With an 8 ft ceiling, 80 sq ft at 1 CFM per sq ft (HVI area method) is 80 CFM, already a standard fan size. A toilet and a shower in that same room do not change the number, since the fixture method only takes over once a bathroom is over 100 sq ft.
What is the smallest bathroom fan I can install?
50 CFM, the ASHRAE 62.2 and IRC Table M1505.4.4 code floor for intermittent operation. HVI's own area method sets no minimum. Its example is a 40 sq ft bathroom sized to a 40 CFM fan, but the code floor still applies on top of that, so a 5x8 (40 sq ft) powder room needs a 50 CFM fan even though the area method alone would size it at 40.
When should the fixture method replace the area method?
Once the bathroom is over 100 sq ft, the HVI area method no longer applies regardless of ceiling height. Use 50 CFM per toilet, shower and standard tub, and 100 CFM per jetted tub, and take the larger of that total and the 50 CFM code floor.
Why is a jetted tub 100 CFM when other fixtures are 50?
HVI's fixture method counts a jetted (whirlpool) tub at 100 CFM, double a standard tub. A standard tub, shower or toilet is 50 CFM each.
Is 50 CFM intermittent the same as 20 CFM continuous?
They are two different ASHRAE 62.2 compliance paths for the same bathroom. An on-demand fan is sized to the 50 CFM floor, while a continuously running fan can use the lower 20 CFM rate.
Does ceiling height change the recommended CFM?
In this calculator, yes, for a ceiling above 8 ft. HVI states 1 CFM per sq ft, approximately eight air changes per hour, and does not adjust it for ceiling height. This calculator treats the rate as an 8 ft ceiling rate (7.5 ACH) and scales it by ceiling height divided by 8 ft to keep that air change rate, so an 8x10 bathroom at a 10 ft ceiling needs 100 CFM, up from 80 at a standard 8 ft ceiling. A shorter ceiling, such as a 7 ft basement bath, keeps the plain 1 CFM per sq ft rate with no reduction.
What if the calculated CFM is higher than any single fan I can buy?
Above 150 CFM, use two ceiling fans or an inline fan, and check the manufacturer's HVI-certified CFM at 0.25 in. w.c. on the spec sheet before you quote it.
How long should the fan run after a shower?
HVI recommends running the exhaust fan for about 20 minutes after a shower or bath to clear the residual humidity. A timer switch or humidity-sensing control keeps that run-on time going automatically.
